Garden Update

It's been a bit since we showed you all our garden so we decided to give you an update! It's June now, and hot and humid are the name of the game. If you have never experienced a Tennessee summer you don't know what you are missing. ENJOY! In Tennessee it is quite normal to walk outside and instantly have your glasses fog over, cold drinks turn warm in a matter of minutes and if you are the least bit prone to get heat stroke IT. WILL. FIND. YOU. And ticks. We are having a bad tick year here in the beloved south... and I don't mean those nasty large things, nope really really little ones. Luckily the mosquitoes aren't as bad as last year, maybe because we finally got the ponds running again, but that's a tale for another post. 

Don't get me wrong it's not all bad, the nights are cool and just made to sit out (or float in the pool) and watch the stars. Fireflies or lightning bugs as they are called here twinkle through the darkness. It's green and lush and gorgeous and we have the most beautiful sunsets, though the sunrises are nothing to scoff at either. 

Anyway everything has gotten huge!! If you don't remember what this looked like a few short months ago check it out HERE, we'll wait. Back? Great! So you can see we added arbors on the left side by our duck house, Mr. Cottage built both of them from scratch. We love them so much! We painted them both white and Mr. Cottage added some cute globe solar lights to the top. We've planted spaghetti squash and cantelope on them and are using garden twist ties and Velcro garden tape to help support the vines. I walk around all the time with it in my pockets so I can tie the way ward vine back down. 

We built a second tier for our raised bed with potatoes so we can keep them growing. Basically we just made a box the same size and then sat it on top of the first and then filled it with more dirt.

Our Roma beans have reached the top of our cattle panels and are starting down the other side.

We planted marigolds throughout the garden to help repel bugs and add a pop of color to the beds, and they have gotten HUGE!

Here is a closer view of what we have fondly daubed the pyramid arbor, this one has cantelope on it. It's just starting to reach the second rung and is looking great. The ties and tape are keeping it upright until it can wrap itself around the rungs.

I have to say I am very proud of these tomatoes. We have put so many hours, sunburns, sweat and maybe a few tears into these babies. To be honest I have no idea what variety these are, they came from a pie plant with several different types that someone gave to my cousin and then the wound up here. But I can't wait to pick some ripe tomatoes!! I can almost taste the salsa...

A lot of our seed tape didn't come up so we are going to replant it the next couple weeks.

Another thing we've added are these awesome Sunnest solar lights (you can check them out HERE), I love the way they look at night and how the mark the walk ways for when we are out in the garden when it is getting dark. Seriously though, show of hands who's lost track of time and stayed in the garden until dusk? *Raises hand*. So these are perfect, easy to put together and I love that they have an off and on button so I can control if they go on or not. Our trellis idea is working GREAT! We are going to add a fourth row of wire to help contain our rather tall plants. Who knew they would get so big?! Now we just have to figure out what to do with all of our tomato cages... 

You can see the duck house tucked back behind the arbors here, PS. an overhall of it's design is coming soon!!! We'll also be adding a third arbor and planting sunflowers in the middle of the lettuce patch to hopefully add some shade. You can also see our watermelon in the box next to the potatoes beginning to spread it's little arms.

We've begun getting peppers from our plants! They've been doing great in their bed.

Between the cantelope and spaghetti squash we have okra, and on the end of the row golden zucchini.

You can see here just how much everything has filled in. Doesn't it look great? We are talking about adding a little sitting area down here also, what do you think?

Look how big the spaghetti squash are getting! Won't be long before we will be picking them.
