Smaller plants (such as onions and chives) can be planted around the base of tomatoes to save space. Or you can plant creepers like melons and cucumber for an easy ground cover to help prevent weeds growing in.

Another group that are companionable are:

  • Squash
  • Celery
  • Corn
  • Melon

Stay tuned for the next part in our companion planting series! What is your favorite thing to plant?

  2. I like the idea of putting squash around the tomatoes. I live where extreme heat and drought is an issue, and this should help shade the roots! Thanks, for sharing!

  3. Companion gardening is so interesting to me. Do you have any suggestions for herbs that do well protecting leafy plants like spinach from bugs?
