Love Is A Verb

With all the tragedies that have been hitting the news lately, it can be hard to see the good in the world. Especially when the ugly is getting the spotlight. Our hearts break each morning when we hear of another police officer senselessly killed, school shooting or stabbing and so many other incidents. Our hearts go out to the families that have lost loved ones, our prayers are with them.

Our society is being split and told it has to pick whose lives matter more than another. So many are falling into this trap. That one race matters more than another. I believe that all lives matter.

My grandma was a singer, you could be talking about anything and she would hear one word and break out into a song that had the same word. Its one of the things I miss the most about her. There is one song that she would sing with my sister and me when were really little- and then with my foster brothers, I will forever remember her voice singing it... red, yellow, black & white they are precious in his sight... perhaps we could all learn something from grandma.

With all this hate and ugliness it's easy to lose sight of what we are supposed to be in this world- salt and light. Are we being a light in our sphere of influence? September marks the anniversary of a  horrible day in American history. September 11th. A day when many lost and sacrificed their lives.

This month I have a challenge for you.

  • Do something for someone else- without expecting something in return.
  • Give your time to a local crisis pregnancy center or homeless shelter.
  • Send a letter to someone you haven't talked to for awhile.
  • Mow your neighbor's lawn.
  • Open a door for a mom with a stroller.
  • Buy a police officer or first responder a lunch or a cup of coffee.
  • If you bake bring a loaf of bread or cookies (you can find recipes for both if you click on our recipe tab at the top of the page)  to a friend or co-worker.
  • Volunteer for a project in your community.
  • Smile at the cashier who has had a bad day, talk to them and genuinely care about them.
  • Take a walk and pick up the trash in your neighborhood.
  • Offer to help someone to their car with their groceries.
  • Take flowers and cards to a local nursing home, or nail polish and give the ladies a manicure.
  • Offer to babysit for a tired mom so she can have a moment for herself.
  • Pray for someone who needs it (and keep praying for them).
  • Take a friend who is struggling with something out to lunch.
  • Bring dinner to new parents, or a sick neighbor.

Do something you've never done before and be a light in the darkness. Love is a verb. Go show someone what love looks like, even if it's something as small a smile.
